CWEA Supports SB 727

CWEA submitted a letter of support on April 29 for Senate Bill 727, which would require pharmaceutical makers to develop a system for consumers to safely and conveniently dispose of expired and unwanted pharmaceuticals. Household medicines can pass through even the most sophisticated wastewater treatment facilities and into waterways, threatening aquatic organisms, biological function in treatment plants and recycled water quality. CWEA  supports SB 727 because it rightly places responsibility for disposal of pharmaceutical waste with pharmaceutical producers, who are best positioned to develop a privately managed and financed system for proper and convenient disposal of unwanted medication. CWEA, along with its clean water partners, spearheaded and funded the California statewide “No Drugs Down the Drain!” public education campaign in 2008.
