The Sausalito-Marin City Sanitary District (SMCSD) has an exciting opportunity to participate in the District’s Internship Program. The program will provide valuable work experience for a possible career in a wastewater or environmental field.
There are currently two (2) District Intern positions available. The selected candidates will work under the direction of facility staff and assist with operation and maintenance of the District wastewater treatment and sewer collection facilities.
Duties may include environmental compliance source control and working in the District’s water quality laboratory.

Selected candidates will be invited to participate in an oral board interview. The District would like to fill the position as soon as possible following the selection process. Applicants considered for appointment will be required to undergo a background check and medical exam, including a drug test.
The Position and Requirements
Under supervision of operations and maintenance staff, the interns will learn the basics of wastewater treatment and sewage collection and conveyance. The interns will be provided an opportunity to observe activities, receive training and complete tasks under supervision. This may include field source control inspections and laboratory water quality testing.
The interns will also be assigned duties such as grounds maintenance, facility housekeeping, cleaning and organizing work areas and vehicle and equipment cleaning. The District will assist the interns in applying for the required SWRCB wastewater OIT certificate. Intern hours can be used for the OIT experience requirement. The District may also assist the interns with obtaining CWEA certifications.
The internship is a temporary at-will position. Compensation is on an hourly basis. The payrate will be $12 to $18 per hour depending on qualifications. Part-time employees accrue sick leave, no other benefits will be provided. The workweek is 32 hours, Mon-Fri from 7am to 3:30pm. Days of the week may be flexible. It is anticipated the internship positions will be for a one-year period with satisfactory performance. Hours are limited to 975 hours per fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th). Candidates must be 18 years of age or older, be a high school graduate or equivalent and must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License and have a satisfactory driver’s record.
Desirable candidate qualifications include:
Interest in the wastewater or environmental field as a career
Job experience in construction, repair and maintenance
Analytical laboratory experience
CWEA Environmental Compliance or Laboratory Technician certification
College work in environmental sciences, engineering or chemistry
SWRCB OIT certification and/or Prior water/wastewater intern experience

The SMCSD provides wastewater conveyance and treatment services to the City of Sausalito, unincorporated communities of Marin City, Tamalpais Valley and Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA).
