On September 9, WEF, AWWA and AMWA sent a letter to Senator Boxer supporting WIFIA and responding to concerns by other organizations. The letter states WEF’s support for a pilot water infrastructure financing program that would be authorized under the Senate-approved Water Resources Development Act. WEF affirms that WIFIA would “complement, not compete” with the existing state revolving fund programs. The Senate passed its version of the Water Resources Development Act (S. 601) in May. S. 601 would reauthorize U.S. Army Corps of Engineers water infrastructure projects, including those for port maintenance and flood protection. The House has yet to act on its version of the WRDA bill, though House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-Pa.) has indicated that the bill would take top priority before the committee when it returns from recess (BNA September 10, 2013).
