The California State Senate has voted to confirm Sean Maguire as a member of the State Water Resources Control Board, following his appointment by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. last year.
“It is an honor to be confirmed by the Senate to continue serving the State of California,” Maguire said. “In my mind there is no greater responsibility than stewardship of our water, and I am wholly committed to overcoming the many challenges we face, such as adapting to the impacts of climate change and ensuring safe drinking water for all Californians.”
The five-member State Water Resources Control Board is responsible for protecting all water quality and water supplies in California, from source to tap. The Board is also responsible for the allocation of surface water supplies for agricultural, public trust, and urban purposes throughout the state.
Maguire fills the position on the Board designated for a civil engineer. Following his appointment by Governor Brown on Dec. 5, 2018, he was recommended for confirmation by the Senate Rules Committee on Aug. 21. Maguire’s term expires in January 2020.
Maguire has had a diverse career both in public service and as an engineering consultant, providing a valuable perspective of the administrative challenges facing a government agency and the needs of a broad array of water interests.
From 2015-2018, Maguire worked for the State Water Board as a manager of the Storm Water Grant Program in the Division of Financial Assistance, and later as a manager in the Division of Water Rights, overseeing administration of water right change petitions, licensing, and cannabis cultivation permitting.
Prior to joining the Board, he worked for an engineering consulting firm serving a variety of municipalities and water agencies throughout the state, focused on water resource planning, drinking water, and wastewater infrastructure projects. Much of his work revolved around integrated water management and developing long-term water supply solutions to meet the needs of both water users and the environment.
Maguire has a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from California State University, Sacramento. He lives in Sacramento.
